National Short Story Week: November 22nd – 28th 2010

Did you know that the first ever ‘National Short Story Week’ starts a week on Monday?

According to its patron, writer Katie Fforde (love that double ff! ), ‘National Short Story Week’ “has been created to bring this underrated form to the public’s attention” and if you’d like to know more, have a look at the website, which also has a list of events taking place to celebrate the short story.

And if you want to see how the experts do it, there are also links to some classic short stories by Charles Dickens, Katherine Mansfield and Edgar Allen Poe.

Whether it’s coincidence or not, the shortlisted stories in the BBC National Short Story award have also just been announced.

They’re being broadcast on BBC Radio 4 from Monday 15th November, with one story at 3.30pm each day. The winner and runner-up will be announced at a ceremony on Monday 29 November, broadcast live on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row.

If you’re lucky enough to be at home this week at 3.30pm (or you have a very understanding boss!), then why not tune in to Radio 4? It’s a luxury to be read to and you might be inspired to write a great short story yourself.

  1. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Helen. It’s good that short stories are being given a higher profile. Now we just need more magazines to publish short fiction.

    Thanks for the links, Helen.
