I took my own good advice and went to the library yesterday. I trudged through the snow, to be exact but it was worth it because I picked up a leaflet about the very first ‘World Book Night’, which is due to take place on 5th March 2011 and promises to be an extravaganza of ‘television programming, all-night events, reading, book parties and a nationwide celebration of the written word’. So, if you love reading – get that date in your diary!
And there’s more. On ‘World Book Night’, no less than 1,000,000 books (yes, you’ve read that right – six noughts – a million!) will be given away in the UK and Ireland and you can be part of that.
They’re looking for an ‘army of book lovers ’ who would be willing and available that weekend to give away 48 books (you can choose your favourite from a list of 25, which includes poetry, autobiography and novels – more details here). The list alone is worth a look, as everything on it I’ve either read and thoroughly enjoyed (especially ‘Fingersmith‘ , ‘Cloud Atlas’ and ‘One Day’) or I’d like to read – time permitting!
If you’d like to be a ‘book-giver’, you need to write 100 words, explaining which book you’d like to give away, why and how you would distribute your copies.
The closing date for applications for the books is 4th January 2011 – so do it now, before the Christmas frenzy and post-Christmas slump descend!
