Test Out Your Title!

Courtesy of a newspaper at the gym (ahem, yes, I was there this morning, working off the Quality Street), I bring you tidings of – well, if not ‘great joy’, then hopefully at least ‘mild interest’:

If you’re writing a novel – or thinking about writing one in 2011 – why not check out your chosen title before you go any further?

Titlescorer on http://www.lulu.com is a new website that will tell you the chances of your book (or at least, its title) being a winner.

British statistician Dr Atal Winkler lead the team that analysed 700 titles of books that made the New York Times Bestseller List between 1955 – 2004 and created the ‘Lulu Titlescorer’, which is a programme that can predict the chances of your title delivering you a bestseller.

Apparently ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ scores an excellent 71 per cent and ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ gets 76%. I don’t have a novel title (yet!) but I have put in some of the titles of my short stories and one of them – ‘Love ‘Em And Leave ‘Em’ – did even better than those: it got 79.6%! Yipppeee!
