Have you seen the new (ish?) magazine ‘Stylist’? I picked it up in my gym the other day and the latest issue has that iconic picture of Marilyn Monroe reading Ulysses on the front – and, even better – FIVE short stories inside!
If you live in a big city you should be able to pick it up on Wednesdays (it’s free!) but if you don’t manage to track down a hard copy (I’m not sure, apart from gyms, where you’d find it. At train stations, perhaps?), do not despair – the website seems to have most of it on there anyway, including the 5 short stories, all written by published novelists.
Much to my annoyance, I discovered, a smidgen too late, that they were running a micro-fiction competition on their website recently. But the site is very ‘literary-friendly’ – they’ve got galleries of ‘the 100 best first lines in a novel’ and that kind of thing – so it’s worth a look, I reckon.
I’ve written to them to ask if they’ll consider publishing readers’ short stories and/or running a short story competition. Well, a girl can try, can’t she?
On a slightly different note, but still magazine-related, the latest (September) issue of Prima is asking for ‘your favourite comfort food – and why’ for their ‘Wise Words’ feature. Think stodgy puddings, ice cream, sausage and beans and chips… (hmm, I’m making myself hungry here). Send your suggestions – just a couple of sentences will do – to email@example.com and you’ll be £25 richer if yours is one of the 10 or so that they feature in a future issue.
