Books, Books, Books…!

I make no excuses  – this post is all about BOOKS! (And, doing the packing, as I am, I’ve realised I’ve got just about enough of them to make a book igloo – like that one on the left!)

It’s not long until 23rd April. Which is quite a busy date in the ‘literary calendar’:  St George’s Day, Shakespeare’s birth/death day and, of course, World Book Night  I won’t say too much about it because I’ve blogged about WBN before here but suffice to say, there are lots of (mostly free) events taking place throughout the country – and the chance to pick up a free book or two (and who’s going to say no to that?!) so it might be worth checking your local library or the events list on the World Book Night website, to see what’s happening in your area.

I’ve discovered a couple of local West Midlands events (ahem, which don’t seem to be featured on the list – naughty!):

Ian McMillan – Warwick Library: 23rd April, Warwick Library, Shire Hall

To celebrate World Book Night 2012 & the official opening of Warwick Library poet Ian McMillan will be performing at Warwick Library, Shire Hall at 7.00pm on Monday 23rd April. Tickets are FREE but numbers are limited. Call Warwick Library 01926 412189 for more details or email Kate Mackie:

An Evening of Books – Solihull Central Library, 23rd April 2012  – this one’s also free but you have to put your name down/get a ticket. Look here for more details of that and other Solihull library events.

And finally, I’m sure you’ll have seen it in the news, but details of J K Rowling’s new novel (for adults, this time), ‘The Casual Vacancy’ have been released.  It’s not out until the end of September but you can already pre-order it!

In the hands of anyone else, a ‘blackly comic’ tale about a town ripped apart by a parish council election, wouldn’t exactly have you beating a path to Waterstones (whoops, nearly forgot and put the apostrophe in there!), now would it? But I’ve got the feeling that it’ll be good. I’ll be buying a copy, anyway. What about you?

  1. Sounds much like our town, and I’d think lots of towns. I’ll be reading it.

  2. I’m a World Book Night giver! 😉

  3. I’ve got 25 copies of A Tale of 2 Cities by Dickens. I requested that one as I live in Rochester, so it was the obvious choice.

I guess I’m just going to distribute them in the High Street *snigger*

I’m a WBN giver too – ‘Rebecca’. I’ve just spent a happy while filling in the details on the inside of each copy, including signing my name. Wonder if that’s how it feels to do a ‘proper’ book signing? One day…
